DAGAMI, Leyte – Super typhoon Yolanda has blown away the house of the family, but not the spirit of their five-year-old child Mia May.

The child lost all her things, including her birth certificate when the monstrous typhoon’s fierce winds totally destroyed their house.

The child’s interest to study encouraged her mom, Emmie, 40, to get a new copy of her record, knowing that this is a big step towards breaking the cycle of poverty.

Kid’s interest motivates parents to reconstruct civil records

DAGAMI, Leyte – Super typhoon Yolanda has blown away the house of the family, but not the spirit of their five-year-old child Mia May.

The child lost all her things, including her birth certificate when the monstrous typhoon’s fierce winds totally destroyed their house.

The child’s interest to study encouraged her mom, Emmie, 40, to get a new copy of her record, knowing that this is a big step towards breaking the cycle of poverty.

“The school is requiring her to provide a copy of her birth certificate, and I don’t want to frustrate my child – that she could not go to school simply because I did not help her,” Emmie said.

Emmie and her common-law husband, Marlon, 34, tried to replace Mia May’s lost birth certificate, but the latter’s scanty P300 weekly income from farming bars them from having the child’s legal identity reconstructed.

“To see that my kid is very interested to go to school inspired me to seek for a replacement of Mia May’s lost record through IDEALS’ project ABCDE,” Emmie added.

Undoubtedly, for a kid to get up as early as 4 a.m. to prepare to go to school implies her interest to learn. Thanks to the ABCDE Project, the child got her passport to build her dreams, she said.
