Destiny of Debts: The struggle of banana farmers in the Philippines
Tens of thousands of farmers in the Philippines are working in the banana industry. They suffer under harsh and unfair conditions by companies who buy their bananas for cheap prices. As a result, women and men farmers and their families are being pushed deeper into poverty.
IDEALS, Inc., in partnership with Oxfam sa Pilipinas, have been working closely with banana smallholder farmers in Mindanao. The organization has supported farmer cooperatives in their efforts to renegotiate contracts or have them nullified.
This documentary, produced in partnership with DKA Austria, shows that the suffering of banana farmers is far from over. As long as the business sector, particularly the banana industry, remains exploitative and abusive, generations of banana farmers await the same destiny — full of debts and mired in poverty.
