Fair Finance Asia – Gender Case Study

Philippine agriculture is fraught with gender issues that make it systematically harder for rural women to have equal access to rural and agricultural resources.

Filipino women in agriculture play indispensable roles in the agriculture sector, in household, food, nutrition security, and in natural resource management. They  primarily contribute to household income through their participation in farming and other income-generating opportunities.

However, in a banana farming community in Compostela, Davao de Oro, women’s labor and contribution are usually unpaid because women’s roles in farming are deemed an extension of their household responsibilities.

Yet, Filipino women farmers who are exposed to synthetic pesticides suffer different adverse health effects such as Myoma and other diseases.
